PLEASE CHECK YOUR CHILD'S HEAD FOR HEAD LICE WEEKLY. |
Our problem with head lice is an on-going, year-long problem. This problem will not be stopped until everyone keeps checking for head lice, and treats the problem promptly. |
Lice are small, wingless, parasitic insects with mouthparts adapted for sucking or biting. Head lice are human lice, and cannot survive on animals. |
How do you know if your child has head lice? One telltale sign is a persistent itching of the scalp. Although lice and their nits (eggs) are difficult to see, they are fairly easy to recognize. Close inspection with a hand lens or magnifying glass may be necessary in order for you to see the small white or grey eggs which are attached to the individual hairs. In checking the scalp, pay particular attention to the area above the ears, and on the back of the head. Lice like to lay their eggs on the waITT1est part of the head. |
If you find lice or nits in your child's hair, you must use a special shampoo to treat the problem. This may be purchased at a drugstore. Regular shampoo has no effect on head lice. Do not use the special medicated shampoo as a regular shampoo. If you are not sure whether you have found lice or nits in your child's hair, contact the school nurse; and she will check before you have to buy the special shampoo. |
If you must treat your child for head lice, DO NOT SEND THE CHILD TO SCHOOL UNTIL YOU HAVE USED THE SPECIAL SHAMPOO, AND REMOVED ALL THE EGGS FROM THE HAIR. You will need to repeat the shampoo treatment in 7-10 days. Please send the empty shampoo box to the school nurse. |
To make sure that your home is free of lice, wash all bedding, towels, and such in hot water, then dry on highest heat setting for at least 20 minutes. Items which are not machine washable must be dry cleaned or stored at room temperature in a tightly sealed plastic bag for at least 2 weeks. Soak combs and brushes in hot water for 5-10 minutes. Vacuum carpets, pillows, mattresses, upholstered furniture, and even the seats and carpeting in your car. |
NOTIFY THE SCHOOL NURSE IMMEDIATELY IF YOU FIND HEAD LICE. |

Please keep this information for use throughout the year. |
