Recently we have learned Fifth Disease has been diagnosed in the Emmett area. Fifth Disease is a common, childhood rash illness caused by the virus Human Parvovirus B19.
The symptoms in children are usually mild: low fever, headache, body ache, chills, nausea and/or sore throat may occur for two to three days. About a week later a bright, red rash appears on the cheeks resembling a "slapped face" look. Symptoms appear 4-20 days after a person is infected with the virus. The contagious period occurs during the time of mild symptoms, as listed above, and before the rash appears.
Children who have Fifth Disease may go to school when they are fever-free, even though they may still have a rash.
